Pair of ambulances hit same moose in Aurora

By Jennifer Osborn ELLSWORTH — Two ambulances struck the same moose while operating on the Airline Road in Aurora March 31, according to Hancock County Sheriff ’s Deputy Hunter Fernald.

The first collision occurred when the moose entered the roadway, causing a northbound 2014 GMC Northern Light ambulance operated by Thomas Gutow, 52, of Castine to strike it, Fernald said.

Meanwhile a 2021 Ford ambulance operated by Cameron Doyle, 26, of Owls Head had been following the first ambulance and also struck the moose, the deputy said. That ambulance belongs to Northeast Mobile Health Services.

Neither driver was injured and both ambulances were able to be driven from the scene, Fernald said. The GMC sustained minor damage to its side and the Ford sustained a reportable amount of front end damage, the deputy said.

The moose did not survive, according to authorities.
